Helia, LLC aims to transcend current treatment options for canine type I diabetes by normalizing blood glucose levels through oral insulin. By using insulin-Siosomes® complexes, the synthetic human insulin protein is encapsulated in a protective environment and remains unharmed by the physiological conditions of the digestive tract. In a laboratory model of a canine gastrointestinal tract, 80% of the insulin-Siosomes® complexes retained viability through the tract. Once absorbed in the blood stream, these complexes degrade and release insulin. As silicon is found naturally in the body, the complex degradation is non-toxic. The rate of complex degradation can be controlled to address both long-term fluctuations of blood glucose levels and immediate post-meal glucose spikes. Helia, LLC’s ultimate aim is to use this technology to treat human diabetes, eliminating needle-administered insulin and providing a personalized treatment regimen.
